Block Area

A wide variety of blocks are available within children's reach. Carpeting ensures children's comfort and warmth, plus reduces noise when blocks tumble. To the right of the white construction hats, note the hanging clipboard. Teachers use it to hold writing paper when children wish to dictate a story about their block building. Sometimes children use paper on the clipboards to sketch their creation. Symbols are placed on storage shelves to show children how blocks can be put away in an organized way.

Accessories enrich block play and encourage in-depth learning. Accessories rotate for variety, and may include items such as space ships, pretend hospital, circus tent, a doll house, farm, or zoo, etc.

Within the block area is a felt board for creating colorful patterned designs with plastic reflectors (such as are put on mailboxes). The reflectors are backed with velcro coins so they attach to the felt. The reflectors are stored in plastic boxes shown. Felt shapes and figures are also provided for play.

Note plants on top of storage shelving. Plants throughout the classroom create a homey atmosphere and introduce children to the science of living things.
